There's a post over on FanficRants that has a secondary question about people editing their work after it's been posted -- if it's even something that's done. (Post is here.)
With abandon, all the time. It's almost hard not to, right now, with doing all the html work. Between re-coding headers and everything else, I'm reading all my stories. Maybe not every single one with a truly critical eye, but anywhere there's garbled html, I'm reading the text around it. And yep, I'm fixing punctuation and pulling out gratuitous epithets and re-structuring sentences so they aren't messy. I'm not changing the overall story, and most of my edits are so minor that they're probably not noticeable without doing a line-by-line comparison. (to me, I suppose, a 'major' edit is re-writing a couple of paragraphs to incorporate the same content but in a more concise, clear manner whereas a 'minor' edit is changing 'the blond' to 'Cloud' or something. anything more than that is 'complete overhaul, possibly with new transmission')
Typos/wrong or missing words/etc. after posting = sorts of things I hope everyone does when they can.
VGY May Claiming Post is up. Still being optimistic about the comm. Will figure something out.
To-do list is a little overwhelming, since I got behind on Thursday due to storms. Shall see how far I get. BBE3 html defuckery. TBM3 line-edits. VGY claims post. Words.

Wow. So yesterday was BBE2 demi-edits, TBM1 line-edits, a lot of reading and gaming, and then an Ar tonelico drabble, Leon/Cloud ficlet-thinger, StS fic and that Kiddy Grade A-ou/Un-ou fic I've been meaning to write since forever. Latter four are of course still on dead tree, but I'll work on that.
Other edits, website stuff. I did get some new coding done too, but not enough to want to make an update out of it.
I had made a list, randomly, of things I owed people - has nineteen things on it (obvs, I owe more, but I only wanted one page) and so far six have little stars by them that I really need more info to keep going, be it a re-watch/play or just more prompt. Two are written and posted. Three are in the notebook from yesterday... so far so good!

Old sex scenes, you are the very worst thing to line-edit.
So anyway, decided ya~ay, going to keep doing header edits. Problem is that after BBE comes a few loose pieces and then The Best Moves, which is on the list for a complete edit-job and whatnot. What do? I'm already paying three gold pieces to go around one fic (well, spread it out into manageable chunks) and here's another one. So I'm line-editing (complete with hideous code!) the first chapter of The Best Moves. *facepalms forever* It's slow work. Really slow. Slow enough I've wandered off, written an Ar tonelico drabble and written either a six page StS fic or a the first six pages of a Rather Long StS fic I've had in mind for awhile. It might be both, since it can stand alone and would work as the first part of said longer fic. Hmmm... ^^;; And five other header edits.
I'm, quite embarrassingly, editing straight into the HTML. It's upping my comfort level, admittedly, because raw code is always good.
I did get another bit of El Shaddai in, too. Have to take that game in small chunks. My brain will explode otherwise. From awesome.
Anyway, 15 header edits, a full edit on TBM1, and I'm feeling pretty accomplished. Might poke more later, might just type up other stuff.

Determined to be productive in a slightly different direction today-- going to be working on website stuff. \o/
I'm still slowly working on the header edits, streamlining them and all that (and taking out the stuff that was common a decade ago and problematic now/just unnecessary). Stumbling block is 'Brightest Blue Eyes' for a couple of reasons. The first is that I am doing some quick edits as I go-- only whatever catches my eye and not proper line edits, though I probably should. And it's a very old fic. My first FFVII fic and the one that made me pretty popular for awhile (along with some KH stuff).
And at the time, despite making my original template from semi-scratch, to save time, I used Netscape's 'Composer' element for quick webpage stuff. Using it is like why I won't use MSWord for a lot of stuff-- it inserted a lot of garbage html that's generally invisible when viewing the page but the raw HTML looks like someone vomited code all over it.
Somewhere along the line, the raw
code
also picked up formatting that looks
like it'd been sent through a mailing
list and picked up weird line breaks
all
over the place and that just bugs the
daylights out of me.
So a lot of editing everywhere and it's a 30,000 word fic with two sequels. I figure if I can do a chapter each session and then a bunch of other stuff, that's pretty good. Going to try to get about 15 headers edited, and then maybe 5-10 new stories up? Should maybe consider summer graphics, too? It's nearly time...
ETA: Argh, and finding some obnoxious code errors that I think Geocities introduced... |

So I stopped, yesterday after work, at Gamestop to maybe pick up a last handful of 'games which require little brainpower but are fun and will distract me from teh-pains'... and ended up with Dead or Alive: Dimensions for 3DS.
I regret not doing this sooner. I've carried the case around the store a half-dozen times in the past and then decided against it, which has been a stupid decision each time. Because ZOMG, fun game is fun and has all the DoAs on it, strung together so the story actually makes sense and everything. \o/ Admittedly, I'd prefer a pile of mini-games, too, ala Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers, because Nintendo handhelds lend themselves to that sort of silliness, but I'm good with what I got, OH YES.
And to prove that my love of the series hadn't keeled in the interim between whenever DoA 4 came out and now? First second Hayate was on screen = insta-squee. Like, out loud. if fanfic comes of all of this, I am not sorry
Somewhere there is a fic half-written, actually, but it seems to be a mash-up of DoA, the current Ninja Gaiden, and the mostly-retconned original Ninja Gaiden. Awesome. What do I even do with that? (And augh, do I even still have a copy of the original Ninja Gaiden? I think I sold it... that might suck to replace...) |
